EU Launches Competitions for European Capital and Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2024
The European Commission has launched the 2024 edition of the European Capital of Smart Tourism, as well as the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism competitions. The competitions aim to encourage cities across Europe to submit their leading examples of smart and sustainable tourism practices.
According to the Commission, tourism is the European Union’s third largest socio-economic activity, representing around 10 percent of the bloc’s GDP.
Despite the sector’s significant contribution to the economy, its potential remains untapped, particularly in the area of smart and sustainable tourism. The Commission aims to keep European tourism ahead of the curve by promoting innovation, accessibility, and sustainability.
This year’s competition differs from previous editions. Only one city will be awarded the title of European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024. Additionally, the European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism has replaced the European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) competition.
Cities competing for the 2024 titles are required to demonstrate their innovative tourism practices by submitting an online application. A panel of independent experts will evaluate applications in the first stage.
Shortlisted cities will then present their candidature to the European Jury, which will select two winners: the ‘European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024’ and the ‘European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2024.’ The winners will be announced in November – December 2023.
Both competitions are open to cities within the EU and non-EU countries that participate in the COSME and Single Market programs.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism competition has a proven track record of success, with the 2024 edition being the fifth. Pafos and Seville are the 2023 Capitals, Bordeaux and València were selected as the 2022 Capitals, Gothenburg and Málaga were the 2020 Capitals, while Helsinki and Lyon won the inaugural competition and jointly held the 2019 titles.
The European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024 winner will receive branding and communication support throughout 2024, including the production of a promotional video, a hashtag sculpture to install in a prominent location, diverse promotional activities, and visibility at the EU level and internationally. The winner will also join a growing and active network of smart destinations, exchange best practices, and learn from one another. To submit an application, press here.
The European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism is open to cities with a population between 25,000 and 100,000. The winning city will serve as an inspiration to other tourism destinations across Europe, enhancing its profile as a quality travel destination and generating economic growth in a sustainable way. To submit an application, press here.
Cities must submit their applications for both competitions by July 5 at 17:00 CET.
