Greek Culture Ministry to Restore Castle on Zakynthos
The Greek Culture Ministry has announced plans to restore the castle on the island of Zakynthos under a budget of 1.5 million euros.
Recently approved by the Central Archaeological Council, the project will be funded by the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Fund as part of a network of cultural routes projects aimed at strengthening Zakynthos’ overall tourism competitiveness.
“The restoration of Zakynthos Castle will offer the island a significant cultural and equally important tourism development resource,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.
Works will include restoring the site’s historic buildings and ruins from the Venetian and Anglo-occupation periods.
The castle of Zakynthos is considered a significant Byzantine and medieval monument. Although having suffered significant damage due to the effects of time, its surviving buildings are of special historical and architectural interest.
The restoration project will focus on several sections such as the large and small gunpowder storage houses, the prison complex and the Agios Ioannis Prodromos church. According to the ministry, any structural problems of the buildings will be repaired, making them safe to visit.
At present, the large gunpowder storage house, located near the south gate of the fort, is the best-preserved building of the castle with the largest interior space. The smaller gunpowder storage house due to its location is planned to be used as an events venue and area for visitors.
Moreover, the Agios Ioannis Prodromos church, built at the end of the 15th century, although in ruins, has significant cultural importance since it was also used as a school and storage house.
The renovation of the castle on Zakynthos is another important step towards preserving Greece’s rich cultural heritage while also boosting tourism in the region offering visitors more recreation options.
