Infrastructure upgrades and promotional actions that will showcase the coastal town of Kalamata in the Peloponnese as a leading international destination topped the agenda of talks between Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias and Kalamata Mayor Thanasis Vassilopoulos this week.
The meeting took place at the Tourism Ministry in Athens ahead of the official launch of the tourism season.
Among others, Kikilias and Vassilopoulos discussed upgrading the “Captain Vassilis Konstantakopoulos” International Airport, the Kalamata marina and port, as well as actions in collaboration with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) required for the further promotion of the Peloponnese city.
Kikilias: Kalamata is a year-round tourism destination
The Greek tourism minister said Kalamata was already an established destination, set to benefit even further as a year-round tourist hotspot thanks the earlier launch of the tourist season.
“The tourist season started earlier than ever on February 19 with a direct flight from Munich. At the same time, the city is emerging as one of the most popular city break destinations for Greeks, while gradually hosting digital nomads from all over the world… strengthening the local economy and the local community, which combined with large tourism and hotel investments create prospects for an excellent year,” said Kikilias.
Vassilopoulos said the meeting was “constructive” and added that all the signs for a positive year ahead were encouraging for Greece and Kalamata.
As part of efforts to reach out to new and more markets, Kalamata in May will be hosting TBEX Europe 2023, one of the largest travel blogger and creator events in the world.
