Athens: Brand New Playground Opens in Metaxourgeio Neighborhood
A new state-of-the-art and safety-certified playground for kids in Athens has opened in the Metaxourgeio neighborhood.
The 31st playground to be built in the last three years through the “Adopt Your City” program of the Municipality of Athens, the new recreation space was made possible through a donation from the Onassis Foundation.

The new recreation space for children, which covers an area of approximately 400 square meters, is located just a short distance from Avdi Square and the Municipal Gallery and aims to become a safe “destination” for children and families, providing a much-needed space for play and fun.
The playground’s layout features a main pathway with a number of routes so that each child or group of children can choose the type of activity that best suits their age.

The playground includes tree houses with uneven towers, a slide, wind stairs, a bridge and climbing equipment, as well as musical storytelling balls, spring toys, balance instruments, a four-seater spring see-saw, interactive boards for learning numbers, two-seater swings and a swing-nest for younger children.
Designed with safety in mind, the playground features a special area for toddlers, while all its equipment and toys have been placed on a specially designed safety surface.

“Our goal is for every young Athenian to have a modern and safe playground within a ten-minute walking distance from home,” said Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, adding that with the inauguration of the new recreation space for children in Metaxourgeio, the municipality has taken the “31st step” towards that goal.
“We thank the Onassis Foundation for their valuable contribution,” the mayor said.
