Metropolitan Park at Faliro Delta to Be Europe’s Largest NEB Project
A new metropolitan park to be constructed at the Faliro Delta, the coastal front between Piraeus and the Athens suburb of Faliro, is touted as being once completed Europe’s largest park, said the Attica Region this week.
The flagship project, to be constructed according to the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative that connects the European Green Deal to living spaces and experiences, is part of a major redevelopment plan for the Faliro Delta budgeted at 365.4 million euros and approved earlier this week.
According to regional authorities, it will be the largest “green development” project in the country made possible fully through EU funding and will be completed in two phases.
Among others, the regional authority said the park will contribute to a better quality of life for residents of the surrounding municipalities and to greater property values.
The NEB initiative focuses on creating spaces that are enriching, inspired by art and culture, responding to needs beyond functionality; sustainable, in harmony with nature, the environment, and the planet; and inclusive, encouraging a dialogue across cultures, disciplines, genders and ages.
Among others, the metropolitan park at the Faliro Delta will be created to address the issue of climate change through the integration of RES and the improvement of the energy performance of existing buildings, the integration of circular economy principles, strengthening biodiversity; aesthetic interventions that will enhance inclusion, co-design, innovation; strengthening accessibility and enriching activities.
Overall, the Faliro Delta project will become a multipurpose recreation and park area that will provide nature, culture, fitness and entertainment activities and options.
Additionally, plans include utilizing Olympic venues along the coastal front and linking the wider are from Faliro to Piraeus and the Peace and Friendship Stadium.
“We worked in a systematic way and achieved significant financing of 365.4 million euros. This amount will help to implement or upgrade the Faliro Delta, one of the most emblematic projects of the country and of Europe,” said Attica Region Governor Giorgos Patoulis after meeting with the mayors of the suburbs involved.
Besides the park, the multi-million-euro project will include upgraded roadway networks, new building projects, underground parking areas, as well as port and seaside projects aimed at redeveloping the seafront area.
