GNTO Gives a Tour of Greece’s Castles with New Publication
The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has announced that it will release a new publication that showcases the iconic castles of Greece.
The luxurious and bilingual coffee table book is designed to promote the country to tour operators, partners, and dignitaries of the organization.
Titled “Touring the Castles of Greece“, the photo book is a follow-up to the GNTO’s last publication “Greece of World Destination” that was released nine years ago in 2014.
Greece is home to over 1200 castles and fortresses, both on the mainland and the islands, which are a significant points of interest for tourists.
According to the GNTO, Greece’s castles were chosen as the book’s main theme since they play a significant part in the country’s history and cultural significance, as well as in the international European political and military scene.
The new publication presents the most important castles throughout Greece, tracing their history from antiquity to the Roman period, Byzantium, the Ottoman occupation, and finally, the establishment of the contemporary Greek state.
The book is compiled of rich visual material from 14 photographers and historical research and texts edited by historian Stefanos Kavallierakis, a Mediterranean and Oriental Studies Professor from the University of Strasbourg.
In Greece, fortresses, castles, fortifications, fortified settlements, tower houses, castle monasteries, and citadels played different roles on a commercial, military, and social level. The new publication highlights these roles and provides interesting historical facts about each construction.
The book, produced by Brainfood Publishing MEPE, will soon be presented at a special event aiming to make it a valuable addition to any traveler’s library.
