Corfu Airport to Close for Upgrade Works
Corfu International Airport will close down during next month for upgrade works on its runway, airport operator Fraport Greece announced on Wednesday.
The Ioannis Kapodistrias airport covering the needs of Corfu, one of Greece’s most popular islands, will stop operations on January 10-24, 2023 and then again on February 8-22, 2023.
Fraport Greece said that only emergency flights will be able to touch down at the airport while other services in the terminal will be available to the interested public.
The works, part of Fraport’s concession agreement, include the reconstruction of the airport’s main runway and will focus on further improving safety and allowing for the handling of larger aircraft and more flights, Fraport said.
The suspension of Corfu airport operations triggered an angered reaction from locals who said the announcement was made last minute and that the island will be isolated while many will be forced to change plans.
“We believe that airport facility maintenance and upgrades are necessary, but the management company failed to inform institutional bodies and the traveling public ahead of time,” said Corfu MP Alexandros Avlonitis in a letter.
I can not manage alone with luggage bus and fwrry. I have had to pay to change my flight date.
People have already bought tickets. Some are not physically able to do Bus and Ferry . My friend is away and now is realy worried that she suddenly has a long journey and unable to manage luggage from bus to Ferry. Not fair to do this as such short notice.
The Airport could remain open. To close it is rediculous. Smaller Flights can land on half the runway. Think again. Just use smaller aircraft and allow Kerkira to function and not lose money, business and visitors
