Athens Among Europe’s Cheapest City Break Destinations for 2023
Athens, Greece, is in the top 10 cheapest city break destinations in Europe to visit in 2023, according to the online edition of Condé Nast Traveller.
Using recent data available from numerous sources, the luxury magazine released a top 10 list of the cheapest and nicest European cities to visit next year.
For the Greek capital, which is mentioned first on the list, Condé Nast Traveller used the UK Post Office 2022 City Cost Barometer Poll where Athens was named the top best value city break destination.
Condé Nast Traveller hails Athens for its good value accommodation and plethora of small, family run, boutique hotels on offer.
Furthermore, it cites data from the UK Post Office Poll, according to which two nights at a three-star hotel for two guests in Athens can cost only £89, adding that there are a number of affordable options in the central Monastiraki area starting at just £52 per night or a double bedroom with breakfast and a view to the Acropolis with a cost as low as £83.
Condé Nast Traveller’s list includes classic country capitals but also regions that are “under the radar”.
Portugal’s Lisbon, which followed Athens in the UK Post Office Poll, is also mentioned in the article for its low-cost drinks and cheap tickets to tourist attractions.
Other mentions include Austria’s Klagenfurt with main courses as cheap as 6 euros; Albania’s Berat with unique architecture and cheap accommodation as low as £35 per night and Bulgaria’s Sofia which was named Europe’s cheapest all-round destination in the Post Office’s Holiday Money Report 2022.
