Zela Aviation Partners with Sitia to Establish ‘Alternative Gateway to Crete’
Cyprus-based air charter group Zela Aviation recently announced a strategic partnership with the Municipality of Sitia on the Greek island of Crete in an effort to develop the city’s airport and promote the area of Lasithi.
With 17 years of experience in the aviation industry and having offices in the UK, Cyprus and Greece, Zela Aviation is aiming to establish Sitia Airport as an “alternative gateway to Crete” through a constructive partnership with the city’s municipality.
“The goal of this collaboration is to highlight the wealth of the region, making Sitia Crete Airport the main entry point,” Zela Aviation’s chairman, Andreas Christodoulides, said.
With a new terminal since 2015, as well as an area of 7,500 square meters, Sitia Airport can handle numerous arrivals daily. The airport has a runway length of 2,040 meters, three aircraft stands and a total terminal capacity of 900 passengers per hour.
“The Sitia municipality has many unexplored opportunities, combining picturesque villages and exotic beaches, with extremely interesting archaeological sites,” Christodoulides added.
Located on the eastern side of Crete, only a few kilometers from the tourist resorts of Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, Sitia is an area full of unspoiled landscapes and home to the renowned beach of Vai, surrounded by the only palm forest in Europe. It is considered an ideal destination with impressive alternations of mountain and sea, boasting friendly locals and a unique hospitality.
“This cooperation between Sitia Crete and Zela Aviation signals our intention to develop the tourist stream in the region, by establishing the Sitia Crete Airport as a gateway to the whole of eastern Crete. With faith and trust in the capabilities of Zela Aviation we are ready to take the first step,” Sitia Mayor Giorgos Zervakis said.
