Athens Airport Handles 17 Million Passengers in First Nine Months
Athens International Airport (AIA) handled 17.3 million passengers in the first nine months of the year, falling 13.6 percent short of its total for January-September 2019.
According to data released by AIA, domestic passengers lagged behind the 2019 levels by 7.4 percent and international passengers by 16.3 percent, respectively.
Domestic passenger traffic increase in September
In September alone, however, the airport recorded an increase in domestic passenger traffic compared to pre-pandemic levels.
During September 2022, the airport’s passenger traffic amounted to 2.58 million, below the respective pre-Covid 2019 levels by 3.9 percent.
Domestic passengers reached and slightly exceeded 2019 volumes by 1.5 percent, while international air travellers presented a single-digit decline of 6.3 percent vs 2019.
Athens International Airport’s number of flights during the first nine months of 2022 amounted to 164,828, i.e. 6.9 percent below the respective 2019 levels.
Analytically, domestic flights slightly surpassed 2019 levels by 1.2 percent, while international operations remained below by 12.9 percent, respectively.
