Safety Measures for Navagio Beach to be Updated

The updating of the safety measures for Greece’s famous Navagio beach was discussed Thursday during a meeting at the Greek Tourism Ministry in Athens.
Located on Zakynthos in the Ionian, Navagio beach is a popular hotspot known for its signature shipwreck.
Attended by members of the committee responsible for the preservation and safe management of Navagio beach, Geology Professor Efthymios Lekkas and Zakynthos Mayor Nikitas Arsenis, the meeting was called following a landslide at the famous beach due to a 5.4-magnitude earthquake in the sea area between the islands of Zakynthos and Kefalonia in the Ionian sea. No injuries were reported on the beach.
During the meeting it was recommended that local authorities allow visitor access to the beach only through three protection zones as defined in a recent study, while keeping a cap on the number of bathers in order to avoid overcrowding near the surrounding cliffs.
The recommendation has been tabled to the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The safety measures are expected to be reviewed and updated in a timely manner.
According to reports, authorities on Zakynthos closed off Navagio beach to visitors on Thursday following the landslide.
This could be a warning for all west facing beaches on the Ionian Islands, as someone may remember the similar beaches on Lefkas, Ithaca, Paxos and Kefalonia (those backed by high cliffs) that have collapsed over the years due to similar earthquakes. Just a thought.
