Culture Ministry Tables Plan for Conservation of Athens Acropolis Walls
The Greek Culture Ministry recently presented a comprehensive plan for a series of restoration projects on the Acropolis in Athens which aim to protect and showcase the UNESCO World Heritage site and enhance the visitor experience.
The ministry presented a detailed analysis of renovation and restoration works budgeted at10 million euros to be carried out over a period of four years at the Acropolis under the country’s “Greece 2.0” recovery plan.
The ministry’s main priority is the maintenance of the Acropolis circuit walls which have over time suffered damage affecting stability. According to the culture ministry, interventions to the archaeological site have been very carefully planned.
The Acropolis walls are in themselves unique monuments which carry special meaning and memory, said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni, underlining the importance of the project.
“All phases of the monument’s history are treated with respect. The main objective of the strategic plan is to formulate a road map outlining the necessary interventions that will ensure the stability of the walls and highlight the site’s archaeological and historical value,” said Mendoni, adding that funding for the works had already been secured.
Over the last few years, the world-famous site, which this year is visited by more than 16,000 people a day, has undergone several upgrades including the installation of a lift and specially designed paths facilitating access to people with mobility issues or disabilities as well as new award-winning lighting.
