Athens-Sounio Coastal Roadway Gets Upgrade
One of Attica’s most scenic drives, the coastal Athens-Sounio roadway is being upgraded to ensure safer conditions, said the Attica Region.
According to regional authorities works are still continuing after the completion of improvements on the Vouliagmeni segment of the road towards Varkiza.
Among others, works included the replacement of worn road pavement with non-slip, noise-reduction asphalt, new markings and signage, and the installation of low-consumption and high-efficiency lighting.
The regional authority said the works are part of a larger modernization project that includes the installation of energy-saving lighting along the entire Attica road network budgeted at 37 million euros.
“Attica’s coastal roadway is changing to become a modern, safe and efficient road,” said Attica Region Governor George Patoulis. He went on to add that road enhancements which prioritize safety were necessary due to the heavy traffic especially during the tourist season.
It should be reminded that the Athens-Sounio roadway runs across the coast where one of the country’s largest urban regeneration projects, The Ellinikon will be constructed. The redevelopment of the coast – known as the Athenian Riviera – is the top government priority.
The Ellinikon Park will also be created on the premises of Athens’ former airport near Glyfada along the roadway, to cost approximately 250 million euros and become Europe’s largest coastal park.
Earlier this month, Development & Investments Minister Adonis Georgiadis said a license had been issued for the construction of the country’s first skyscraper at The Ellinikon.
