Most Greeks consider technology as an essential part of their summer vacations with 6 out of 10 saying that they cannot leave their cell phone behind.

A recent survey conducted by YouGov indicates that Greek citizens are far from bothered by the use of technology during the holidays: on the contrary, they feel that mobile phones and tablets improve the travel experience by keeping them connected with friends and social networks.

According to the data, 59 percent of Greeks cannot leave their mobile phones during the holidays.

Twenty five percent of respondents neither agree nor disagree with this opinion, while 13 percent totally disagree.

Majority says cell phones improve the travel experience

According to the survey, 79 percent of Greeks strongly agree that a phone or a tablet can improve the travel experience.

Meanwhile, 17 percent neither agree nor disagree with this opinion, while only 4 percent strongly disagree with this attitude.

Sixty two percent of citizens in Greece say they like to stay connected with the people close to them even while on vacation – a desire which is served by technology.

Only a small number of Greeks – 19 percent – say that technology “prevents them from enjoying their holidays”, while 32 percent have neither a positive nor a negative opinion on the matter. In fact, almost half (48 percent) respond that they strongly or somewhat disagree with the view that technology prevents them from enjoying their holidays.

Domestic vs international travel

After two years of Covid-19 and although restrictive measures are no longer in place, the YouGov survey shows that the majority of Greeks opt for domestic travel and still prefer to vacation in the country, rather than in a foreign country.

According to the survey, 9 out of 10 Greeks prefer to travel in Greece this year. They opt mainly for beach holidays, while the main criteria for selecting a destination are value for money; affordable prices; and good company (friends and family).

YouGov’s survey was released to the Greek market by the Federation of Hellenic Information Technology & Communications Enterprises (known as SEPE).
