Greece Flight, Passenger Numbers Up in First Half of Year

Greek airports handled a total of 22.4 million passengers in the first six months of the year marking a 269.1 percent increase over the same period in 2021 (6 million passengers), recouping 90.6 percent of passenger traffic compared to the first half (H1) of 2019, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) said this week.

More specifically, according HCAA tentative data for the January-June 2022 period, the number of flights handled at Greek airports was up by 95.7 percent to a total of 207,289 of which 90,564 were domestic and 116,725 international. In the same period last year, Greek airports handled 105,930 flights in total.

Compared to H1 in pre-Covid 2019, which was a record year for Greek tourism, this year flight numbers were down by 3.4 percent against a total of 214,489 flights (H1-2019)

Arrivals in H1 2022 were also down by 9.4 percent compared to January-June 2019 at 24.7 million arrivals

In June, a total of 8.39 million passengers went through Greek airports on 67,428 flights – 22,212 domestic and 45,216 international – up by 167.6 percent and 64 percent respectively compared to the same month in 2021 (3.1 million passengers and 41,107 flights).

This year in June, the number of flights exceeded June 2019 flights (66,827 flights) by 0.9 percent.

Passenger numbers at 8.39 million for the same month were down by 0.3 percent compared to 2019 and a total of 8.4 million.

Domestic arrivals in June were up by 190.5 percent over June 2021 (1.19 million) to 3.48 million passengers

The number of international flights, meanwhile, increased by 0.1 percent to 3,480,812 compared to pre-Covid 2019 and 3,477,906 flights.

In the first five months of the year, a total of 14 million passengers went through Greek airports marking a 377.7 percent increase compared to the same period in 2021 and 2.93 million passengers, recouping 86 percent of pre-Covid levels.
