The Santorini Experience sports tourism event is entering a new era with its 2022 edition that will feature new running and swimming routes on the island of Santorini.

After a two-year absence due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Santorini Experience will take place on the Cycladic island during September 23-25.

Half marathon to be held for first time

Aiming to highlight the island’s history, culture and growing potential as a sports destination, Santorini Experience, for the first time this year will host a half marathon event named “Daedalic Kore of Thira”.

The running event has been named after the marble Daedalic Kore of Thira, a unique archaeological finding of supernatural size (2.30 meters height and about 750 kilograms weight), dating back to 640 BC.

The Kore was found in 2000 preserved in excellent condition at the site of Sellada in Ancient Thira by late archaeologist Charalampos Sigalas. This remarkable sculpture will soon be exhibited in the outdoor area of the Archaeological Museum of Thira.

The “Daedalic Kore of Thira” Half Marathon will take place on Saturday, September 24, in the areas of Oia, Imerovigli and Fira.

Santorini Experience athletes will also have the opportunity to participate in the 1.5-mile “L & E Nomikos” open water swimming route.

The swimming event will be held on Sunday September 25, starting from the volcano and ending at the old port of Fira, that is offering an imposing view of the island.

Starting this year, the swimming route will bare the name “L & E Nomikos” in honor of the founders of the Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation, established in 1979 by shipowner Evangelos Nomikos, who adored the sea and his island.

Organized by the Municipality of Thira and the sports tourism department of ActiveMedia Group, Santorini Experience will take place on Santorini for the sixth year.

More information on this year’s event, registrations and special offers will be announced in the coming weeks at www.santorini-experience.com.
