Forbes Advisor: Greece in Top Summer Destinations for American Travelers in 2022

Greece is among the top 10 international summer destinations for American travelers this year, ranking sixth on a list released recently by Forbes Advisor.

Forbes Advisor asked 2,000 Americans about their summer vacation plans and more. The survey was conducted by market research company OnePoll, with data collected between April 29 – May 2.

In general, travelers are more likely to venture out beyond US borders this summer:

  • 79 percent of travel insurance purchases for trips from June 1 through Labor Day (to be celebrated on September 5) are for international trips, according to Squaremouth. Last year, only 56 percent of travel insurance purchases were for international vacations
  • Italy is the top international destination for summer travel this year, skyrocketing from No. 10 in 2021
  • The Philippines landed in the Top 10 for the first time in three years, and Ireland made a comeback after dropping off the list last year.

Other key findings of the Forbes Advisor survey include:

  • Costs and Covid impact summer vacation plans

More than half (54 percent) of summer vacationers surveyed say the cost of trips is affecting their travel plans.

Half report that concerns about Covid-19 and their finances were taken into account when planning vacations.

With trip cost the top concern among summer vacationers, money-saving measures may be the financial version of sunscreen—slathered on to prevent vacation budgets from blistering.

The survey found that Americans planning to take a summer vacation this year say they reduced their original travel budgets by an average of 1,636 dollars.

Going to a less expensive destination (45 percent) is the most popular tactic for trimming costs, followed by taking fewer trips (37 percent) and traveling shorter distances (35 percent).

  • 42% of US travelers will spend more

On the other hand, the survey found that more than 40 percent of travelers plan to spend more money this summer than in past years.

Overall, when comparing summer travel costs for this year to 2021:

– 42 percent say they’ll spend more than last year

– 28 percent will spend less

– 15 percent expect their vacation spending to be about the same.
