Greece’s sustainable tourism side was promoted to European travel agents during four webinars organized recently by the European Travel Agents’ and Tour Operators’ Associations (ECTAA) and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO).

Held May 3-12, the webinars were held exclusively for ECTAA members and aimed to promote Greece’s sustainable destinations to tourism professionals in The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg, the UK, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The webinars focused on Greece’s sustainable tourism practices and the special experiences that promote the multi-thematic tourism products of the country.

The first part of presentations included the case study of Astypalea, a small island in the Dodecanese that took its first step towards a “greener future” in 2021 with the delivery of eight electric vehicles by the Volkswagen Group.

During the event, Aldemar Resorts CEO Alexandros Angelopoulos also presented his views on the sustainable development practices implemented in Greece.

Greece’s experiential tourism options

Part of the webinars focused on experiential tourism as a way to connect tourism experiences with primary production and trade.

During the events, MBike Events and Digital founder Spyros Papageorgiou presented the paradigm of the island of Kos, which, during the last few years, has become a popular cycling destination among foreign travelers. As he said, there are over 6,500 bicycles available for rent on the island.

Papageorgiou also expressed his confidence that Kos could evolve into a cycling hub for nearby islands.

Moreover, Nikos Rachovitis, founder of Joysters, a company that offers authentic travel experiences, presented to travel professionals in The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg, the family tourism options and youth summer camps of Evia.

Travel agents from Germany, Austria and Switzerland also received information on Lemnos’ extreme watersports facilities, as well as on Naxos’ tourism activities.

Lastly, a webinar that that took place with the participation of travel agents from the Scandinavian countries presented golf as an eco-friendly tourism option in Greece. Crete Golf Club General Manager Nikos Stasinopoulos presented the case study of Crete.

ECTAA to hold events in Greece

The cooperation between GNTO and ECTAA will continue with two major international events: ECTAA this September will hold the annual meeting of its Board of Directors in Athens, while in November, the organization will hold the semi-annual meeting of its members in Chania, Crete.

It should be noted that Greece is ECTAA’s preferred destination for 2022 and every month the organization promotes a different Greek region through its website. This month – May –  is dedicated to the Northeastern Aegean islands.
