Sojern: Global Travelers Picking Greece for Summer Vacation

Greece is winning over more holidaymakers from around the globe who are making plans for summer as demonstrated by a 78 percent increase in the number of international flight searches for Greek destinations compared to the beginning of the year, according to digital travel solutions provider Sojern.

More specifically, since April, international flight searches to Greece have increased by 78 percent compared to the beginning of 2022 while domestic searches are up by 18 percent.

Main source markets according to Sojern flight bookings from the last 60 days: Germany accounting for 17.5 percent of total bookings, the US (7.9 percent), the UK (5.9 percent), and France (5 percent) with domestic travel accounting for 28.8 percent.

Indicatively, according to data provided by INSETE, the research body of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), airline seat capacity on incoming international flights to Greece is increasing.

The average trip duration for both domestic and international holidaymakers to Greece is four to seven days.

Search activity for hotels in Greece is also on the rise with international searches up by 17 percent while domestic searches are down by 51 percent.

Main markets interested in Greek hotels are the US accounting for 33.2 percent of all related searches, France (18.1 percent), the UK (11.2 percent), Italy (8.5 percent), and Greece (5 percent).

Based on hotel searches made over the last 60 days, domestic travelers aim to stay for one day (38 percent) while international travelers (35 percent) are looking for an average of four to seven days.

According to Sojern data, overall travel intent to Europe is significantly higher than in 2021, when there were travel restrictions in place, with year-over-year flight searches up by more than 200 percent.

Due to Covid-19 measures, summer travel became more local in 2020 and 2021, when nearly two-thirds of European summer travel was domestic.

Looking ahead to 2022, Sojern analysts list the top five European destinations for European travelers compared to 2021. Greece is once again among the favorites with Spain (26 percent) remaining in the lead followed by Italy (17 percent), France (12 percent), Portugal (10 percent), and Greece (6 percent).
