Marin Hotel Completes Renovation, Welcomes Guests to Heraklion

The Marin Hotel, located in Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, in 2021 completed an ambitious renovation project for its rooms and public areas.

Marin is a year-round city hotel operating since 1980, welcoming business and leisure travelers to Heraklion.

The 44-room hotel underwent its first renovation in 2005. Its second overhaul was completed in June 2021 – in time for the start of the summer tourism season in Greece.

“We started the renovation process in April 2021 and despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we managed to welcome our first guests on June 26,” Manolis Kalaitzakis, manager of Marine Hotel, told GTP Headlines.

The 500,000-euro project included the renovation of Marin’s rooms and bathrooms which now feature simple lines, light colors, unique decoration and luxury amenities offering comfort and warm hospitality.

Marine also proceeded with the overhaul of its reception area, conference and meeting facilities.

In addition, the hotel doubled the size of its kitchen with the aim to further expand the facilities of its Gazebo Roof Garden restaurant, that is located on the sixth floor and offers stunning views of Heraklion and its historic Venetian harbor.

The management’s initial plan was for the restaurant to serve both guests and visitors. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the restaurant is now open only to guests for breakfast and à la carte dinner.

According to Kalaitzakis, the hotel’s renovation further highlighted its modern furniture and decoration.

“We hope that this renovation will contribute to the hotel’s successful operation in Heraklion’s hospitality market that – during the last five years – has seen the opening of many new hotels,” he said.

Furthermore, the hotel’s staff has been trained to offer prime hospitality services always in line with the Covid-19 health protocols.

“We are looking to attract even more repeat travelers to Heraklion, both for business and leisure,” Kalaitzakis added.

2021 summer season deemed a success

Following its reopening in June, the Marin Hotel saw occupancy rates reach 100 percent.

“We anticipated occupancy rates to reach 80-85 percent. However, demand exceeded our expectations with occupancy rates reaching 100 percent from mid-July until late October,” Kalaitzakis said.

The hotel has adopted the latest protocols for Covid-19 in order to ensure the safety of both its guests and staff including the thorough cleaning and disinfection of rooms and public spaces, electronic check-in and check-out, and the continuous training of its staff.

“We wish for our travelers to feel that they have found a home away from home. The majority of our employees have been working with us since 2005, and have developed a family-like environment that our guests embrace and enjoy,” Kalaitzakis said.

The Marin Hotel is located next to Heraklion’s “Koules” Venetian φortress and within a walking distance from significant museums such as the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and the Natural History Museum of Crete.
