Greece Seen by Millions Through China’s WeChat Channel
The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) last month celebrated the 2021 Chinese National Day and promoted Greece to internet users in China and all over the world through the WeChat Channel social media platform.
In cooperation with WeChat, the organization’s service in China held two online events that invited millions of users to participate and win special prizes including Greek products such as olive oil and wine. WeChat is China’s most popular social media platform.
1. The Greek Week Live Streaming Contest
The GNTO and WeChat organized a two-week contest for bloggers that involved daily live broadcasts from various destinations and monuments across Greece. Prizes were given to those with the highest number of views.
Dozens of Greek and Chinese bloggers that live in Greece accepted the challenge and presented their favorite Greek destinations through WeChat.
According to the GNTO, the action was deemed a success with a total of 39 broadcasts that gathered over 4.5 million views.
More specifically, a couple living in Greece (Sun Youlian και ο Mr Tsioudas) went live from Athens, the Saronic islands and Nafplio. The couple’s walk on Athens’ historic and commercial center gathered 252,990 viewers.
Another success was that of Greek twins and influencers Marianna and Sofia Erotokritou who streamed live from Athens, Thessaloniki and Naxos.
Their live broadcast from Thessaloniki alone gathered over half a million views. The two influencers are Greece’s tourism ambassadors to China.
Meanwhile, the Greece-China Times news website also made six live broadcasts from Athens, Santorini and Aegina that earned 67,675 views.
2. “See Greece through WeChat Channel” campaign
The GNTO and WeChat in October also ran an online campaign titled “See Greece through WeChat Channel” that called on Chinese users to upload videos from their trips to favorite Greek destinations on GNTO’s official account.
A total of 145 videos were uploaded that attracted 350,000 views and 1,700 comments.
Among the most popular videos were the “Road trip to the Peloponnese” by blogger “Homeland Greece” and “In the Name of Greece” that presented a group of Greek students singing a Chinese song under the Acropolis.
The two online events were held as part of the 2021 Greece – China Year of Culture and Tourism initiative.
