Spotlight on Athens Marathon #iAMAuthentic this Weekend

Everything is ready for the 38th Athens Marathon. The Authentic, which kicks off for the first time this weekend (November 13-14) after the outbreak of Covid-19.

This year’s motto (and hashtag) #iAMAuthentic brings 30,000 athletes – reduced this year due to Covid-19 precautionary measures – to the site of Marathon, where they will begin the 42.19km (26.2 miles) historic race.

“Each person is unique, each person is authentic, exactly like the Athens Marathon,” organizers said referring the event’s comeback and new slogan.

Events will be held on both Saturday and Sunday in the run up to the classic race which will also include 5km and 10km runs.

The opening ceremony of this year’s Marathon is scheduled to take place on Saturday at 12:30 at the archaeological site of Marathon.

Athens Marathon organizers presented the final details and the new slogan on Wednesday, during a press conference at the Taekwondo Olympic Center in Faliro, where the Marathon Expo is being held.

SEGAS (Hellenic Athletics Federation) President Sofia Sakorafa said the Athens Marathon was the “mother of all of the world’s marathons” and thanked the dozens of volunteers as well as co-organizers for their support. She went on to add that the “goal is to amplify the message it [the race] sends. Participation should become a ‘life promise’ for great athletes as well as for amateur runners, she said.

Attica Governor George Patoulis referred to the importance for tourism of the mega-sporting event and added that the regional authority had doubled funds allocated to the annual Marathon, which he described as being a “powerful pillar of culture and sports”.

Marathon Mayor Stergios Tsirkas said the municipality and locals were ready to welcome the thousands of athletes who will begin their race at the starting point on Sunday.

Meanwhile, according to forecasts, the weather on Sunday is expected to be fair ranging from 11 to 16 degrees Celsius.
