Attica Named Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination at WTA 2021
The Greek Region of Attica has been announced Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2021, for its unique coastal destinations and diverse tourism products.
Attica, which encompasses the entire metropolitan area of Athens, Greece’s capital and largest city, was selected among leading European tourism destinations including Barcelona, Venice, Istanbul, Lisbon, Porto and Dubrovnik.
The Region attracted the most votes as it offers:
– an international airport awarded for its safety features
– luxury hotels and accommodation options for all budgets
– the Acropolis, one of the most significant world heritage sites
– Blue Flag awarded beaches located within a 15-minute drive from the city center
– dozens of islands accessible by ferry through Piraeus – one of Europe’s leading ports
– access to the coastal zone through a state-of-the-art tram line
– dining and entertainment options at impressive marinas
– numerous gastronomy options on the Athenian Riviera and a wide selection of wines from renowned vineyards
– a combination of mountain and seaside destinations
– high quality cultural performances.
Attica’s nomination was initiated by the region’s governor, George Patoulis, and submitted by the “New Metropolitan Attica”, an organization that specializes in strategy planning and project development for local authorities.
“This award rewards our coordinated efforts that – despite the Covid-19 crisis – have lead to significant actions. Through infrastructure works and sustainable development initiatives, with clean cities and seas, and significant investments, the Region of Attica is changing into a global metropolitan center. We wish for Attica to continue to attract more travelers and repeat visitors and soon win the global WTA prize,” Patoulis said.
The World Travel Awards has been rewarding the leaders of the global tourism industry since 1993.
Today it is considered the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which all others aspire.
