Greek carrier AEGEAN has been announced Best Regional Airline in Europe for the 10th year in a row at the World Airline Awards 2021 by Skytrax, an international air transport rating organisation.

Although usually organized annually, the 2021 Skytrax awards were based on a much extended customer survey period (from September 2019 to July 2021) with the results reflecting a mix of more normal travel times combined with travel during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Voted by customers, the focus of the annual survey is for travellers to make their own, personal choices as to which airline they consider to be best.

According to the results, although demand for air travel was severely impacted by the pandemic and global travel restrictions in 2020 and 2021, leading airlines such as AEGEAN managed to stand out.

“During an unusual period for the aviation industry and the global community, its is a great honor for AEGEAN to be awarded, once again, for the quality of its services by its passengers,” the company’s CEO Dimitris Geroyiannis said.

AEGEAN ranks 36th among the World’s Top 100 Airlines for 2021.

In addition, AEGEAN has been voted third Best Regional Airline in the World for 2021 and 10th in the “Best Airline Staff in Europe” category.

“AEGEAN has achieved a significant record by winning over travelers for a 10th consecutive year. All airlines were evaluated for the high quality of the services offered by their staff,” Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said.

“We are optimistic for the future and hope that from 2022 travel will return to normal,” he added.

AEGEAN honored with Covid-19 Excellence Award

AEGEAN also won the COVID-19 Airline Excellence Award 2021 for the health and safety measures applied on board and on the ground.

Covid-19 standards were rated by Skytrax across a number of key areas including; information and signage, distancing marking and controls, face mask usage consistency amongst staff and passengers, visibility and frequency of hand sanitisers, standard and availability of hygiene products, adapted service in the airport and onboard flights, and cleaning standards and frequency during the end to end travel experience.

The big winner of the 2021 Skytrax awards was Qatar Airways that won the title of World’s Best Airline for the sixth time. Singapore Airlines ranked second, and ANA All Nippon Airways in third  place, out of more than 350 airlines included in the survey results.

The World Airline Awards began in 1999, when Skytrax launched its first global, annual airline customer satisfaction survey. They are referred to as the Oscars of the aviation industry.
