Greece Launches Online Service for Official Translations

Greece has launched an online service for the official translation of documents to facilitate citizens and businesses seeking certified translators, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced recently.

Citizens are no longer required to visit the ministry’s former translation service. Those in need of translations can now select the translator of their choice from the Electronic Registry of Certified Translators and contact them directly.

All they have to do is either login in to gov.gr by using their Taxis codes and search for a certified translator in the section “Citizen and Everyday life / Translations / Search for a certified translator” or enter https://metafraseis.services.gov.gr.

Certified translators provide their services as freelancers and translate the following types of documents from a foreign language to Greek and vice versa:

– public and private documents submitted by individuals or public agencies

– foreign public documents, as defined in the Hague Convention, provided that they bear the stamp of the Hague Convention “APOSTILLE” when they originate from a country that is a party to the Convention

– private documents may be officially translated if they are validated or certified. Certified translators may also translate non-validated, non-certified, unsigned and computer-generated private documents, whose translation will not be official.

Contact between citizen and translator and the exchange of documents can be done exclusively online.

In addition, the translated documents carry a unique barcode and the qualified electronic signature of the translator.

The new digital service also allows certified translators to enter their translation particulars and join the service.
