Greece Attracting Higher Profile Hotel Customers, Says GBR

Greece in June appeared to attract customers of a “higher profile”, as revenue per occupied rooms at resort hotels was high while demand was very low, according to the latest report by GBR Consulting on the Greek hospitality sector’s performance for the second quarter of 2021.

GBR’s data of June 2021 showed higher average spend at resort hotels as the total revenue per occupied room was significantly higher than June 2020 – with very low demand – but also compared to the pre-pandemic levels in June 2019.

“This could indicate that Greece is attracting a higher profile customer, who is willing to spend more, possibly supported by available excess savings accumulated during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic,” BGR said.

With regard to the performance of Greek hotels for that month, GBR’s data showed that overnight stays in June reached a level of only 38 percent compared to the pre-pandemic levels in June 2019.

The number of overnight stays in hotels in Athens and Thessaloniki that month reached 43 percent of the levels of 2019. Meanwhile, the performance of resorts was lower. Overnight stays at resorts in Greece in June reached only 35 percent compared to June in 2019.

In Athens, 87 percent of the room supply was in operation in June and revenue was at the level of 39 percent of the same month in 2019.

In Thessaloniki some 88 percent of hotel rooms were operational in June with room revenue that month reaching a level of 44 percent over the performance in June 2019.

About 72 percent of the resort hotels participating in GBR’s monthly performance survey were in operation in June 2021, reaching total revenues of 48 percent compared to the pre-pandemic levels in June 2019.
