Twenty Fountains in Athens Get Revamp

Folionos Negri (Drosopoulou st), Athens

The Municipality of Athens has completed the revamp of 20 fountains in the Greek capital’s center and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Athens’ history and culture is strongly connected with its fountains that attract residents and visitors throughout the year.

The municipality has rolled out a major revamp project to salvage the city’s fountains that had been abandoned in the past years.

Its aim is to revive their glory and “make them part of the city’s decor as well as part of the everyday life of residents and visitors that walk, play and live in parks and squares”, the municipality said in an announcement.

Truman square, Athens

The first 15 revamped fountains are located at the squares of Truman, Rigillis, Research Foundation, Metaxourgeio, Aigyptou, Amerikis, Attikis, Messologiou, Nathanail and Lavriou, as well as at the junction of Veikou and Dimitrakopoulou streets, in the areas of Fix Patision, Agios Nikolaos, Fokionos Negri (Drosopoulou) and on Ymittou Street.

Works will soon be completed to five more fountains located in the area of Fokionos Negri, at the Athens Cultural Center on Akadimias street and at the squares of Mavili and Madritis.

The municipality’s revamp project foresees the cleanup, repair and restoration of a total of 34 fountains in the Greek capital.

Repairs also involve the fountains’ drainage and lighting systems, waterproof surface and marble legs.
