Event: Thessaloniki Travel Professionals to ‘Connect’ with Hosted Buyers from 15 Countries

Tourism professionals from Thessaloniki and 15 foreign countries will have the opportunity to discuss and network during the online “CΟΝΝΕCT Tourism & Travel Event Thessaloniki” to be held during May 11-12.

Organized by the Thessaloniki Convention Bureau (TCB), the event will host 50 hosted buyers from Germany, Israel, Romania, France, Italy, Belgium, Poland, Russia and Slovenia among other countries, and around 60 suppliers from Thessaloniki and the Central Macedonia region.

CONNECT aims to promote Thessaloniki and its brand, enhance entrepreneurship and promote the tourism businesses of Thessaloniki and the wider Central Macedonia region through two events:

  • The “Thessaloniki, city break & MICE destination” event that will take place on May 11, with the participation of TCB members and other businesses
  • The “Alternative tourism in Central Macedonia” event to be held on May 12.

“We’ve decided to hold the event a few days prior to the opening of Greek tourism on May 14. We’ve named it ‘CONNECT’ because want to show that the time is right to get over the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic and start to connect with each other,” TCB President Yiannis Aslanis told reporters during a press event on Wednesday.

According to the TCB’s president, the bureau aims to turn CONNECT into an annual physical event that will be taking place in Thessaloniki with the participation of local suppliers and foreign hosted buyers.

This year, CONNECT will take place on a special online business platform which will allow international hosted buyers to conduct B2B meetings with suppliers from Thessaloniki and the wider region.

In addition, the platform will offer a digital tour to the area’s points of attraction through a live broadcast.

Central Macedonia to present alternative tourism offerings

On May 12, the Region of Central Macedonia will present the area’s alternative tourism offerings through the CONNECT platform.

“The presentation will be based on Central Macedonia’s message, ‘Just 60 minutes’ which has been launched with the aim to show that Thessaloniki’s visitors can travel from the city to any place they choose in Central Macedonia within 60 minutes,” Aslanis told the press.

The event will coincide with the launch of Central Macedonia’s new tourism campaign, which was prepared during the lockdown period, with the aim to promote the destination in the post-Covid-19 era.

“We hope that CONNECT will help us create better circumstances for the promotion of the region… as well as for the start of the tourism season in mid-May,” Central Macedonia Deputy Governor for Tourism Alexandros Thanos said during the press event.

“We also anticipate that during the year we will have the opportunity to promote the destination through fam and press trips that offer the real experience. Travel and hospitality remain a top priority for our destination,” he added.

The CΟΝΝΕCT Tourism & Travel Event Thessaloniki will take place with the support of the Central Macedonia Region under the auspices of the Interior Ministry (Macedonia-Thrace), the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Municipality of Thessaloniki.
