Sea Safety at Greek Beaches a Priority for GNTO

Aiming to prevent accidents on Greek coasts and at sea, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) has joined forces with the Safe Water Sports non governmental organization.

Ahead of the National Day for the Prevention of Sea Accidents and Drowning that is held every year on May 11, the two organizations singed a memorandum of cooperation.

“The memorandum is an important step to jointly promote actions and initiatives that will highlight our country as a leading safe destination for maritime tourism. It is a national effort which we all need to support,” GNTO Secretary-General Dimitris Fragakis said.

Safe Water Sports is an NGO that was established in response to a 2014 accident on Mykonos, that led to the death of a 10-year-old child.

The cooperation between the two organizations foresees:

– Common awareness actions, in order for Greeks and foreigners to become aware of the dangers, prevent accidents and trust certified water activities during their holidays on the Greek coasts.

– The creation of programs for domestic and foreign institutions and enterprises for the promotion of maritime tourism and alternative forms of leisure activities and sports on Greek coasts.

In an announcement, the GNTO underlined that it has developed a national tourism policy that puts the safety of Greek and international visitors first and also recognizes the significance of the development of maritime tourism and relevant activities.

According to the president and founder of Safe Water Sports, Panagiotis Paschalakis, the two organizations have joined forces to make Greece one of the safest destinations in the world when it comes to sea recreational activities.
