Greece Extends ‘Only Essential Travel’ Rule for Domestic Flights

Non-essential travel between Greek prefectures still remains prohibited, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) said on Saturday.

According to the HCAA’s updated aviation directive (NOTAM) on air travel in Greece, all restrictions for domestic flights in the country have been extended until Monday, April 5.

The ban on non-essential domestic air travel is part of the Greek government’s efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic in the country and concerns all domestic scheduled, commercial and general/business flights.

The updated aviation directive states that only essential travel is allowed for health and business reasons, family reunification, and returning to permanent residence.

Exempt from the restrictions are emergency flights, Hellenic national healthcare system flights, state flights, sanitary flights, humanitarian flights, military flights, cargo flights, fire fighting flights, frontex flights, technical landing flights (where passengers do not disembark) and ferry flights (return of with crew without passengers).

Covid-19 travel restrictions for all international flights to Greece have also been extended until April 5. The restrictions include a 7-day quarantine measure for all arrivals from abroad (except passengers from Israel that hold a Covid-19 vaccination certificate and negative PCR test) as well as special restrictions for flights to Greece from the UK and the United Arab Emirates.

There are still no ‘borders’ between EU nations any restrictions on freedom of moment (IE lock-downs) are per individual countries. So if Germans are still allowed to move freely about their country, they can come to Greece are long as they follow all protocols, IE quarantining and lock-down, masks ect.

So can anyone please explain to me HOW is it acceptable that planes landed in Corfu and Crete yesterday direct from Germany!? We have been told tourism is set to open mid May. We have been told about the Dutch experiment with an invitation to stay at an AI hotel in Rhodes so why does it feel as though these flights were coming in under the radar. The tourists, who I am sure will be explained away as visitors travelling on business, seem to be driving around both islands. Are they not under quarantine rules? This governmental has turned this into a farce. They have just pissed on the nations efforts to “stay Home”, “Stay safe”. I cannot travel outside my dimos. I cannot have a socially distanced coffee with my friends on a beach ( unless we can walk there and then only to exercise). Germany’s third wave is worse than ours. Our third wave is still raging… I am beyond words. I really need someone to prove to me that this government is not putting the economy before the health of its citizens. That it is not making a mockery of this 5 month lockdown.
