ICAO to Celebrate Achievements of Women in Aviation

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) on March 8 will celebrate International Women’s Day with a virtual event dedicated to this year’s UN Women theme “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world”.

Titled “International Women’s Day High-level Dialogue”, the virtual event will be held in collaboration with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Airports Council International (ACI).

“ICAO intends to celebrate the tremendous efforts by women in the aviation sector who together with men continue to support safe, secure, efficient and environmentally responsible aviation systems around the world,” the organization said in an announcement.

“Our daily lives have been upended as we had to adapt to a ‘new normal’. Covid-19 is disproportionately affecting women and girls. According to UN Women, the pandemic is deepening pre-existing inequalities, exposing vulnerabilities in social, political and economic systems which are in turn amplifying the impacts of the pandemic. Yet, women are resilient and continue to positively steer social, political, economic, and cultural change within their communities, and at the national and international levels.”

The event’s keynote speakers will share their insight on the challenges and opportunities created by the Covid-19 pandemic for women in the aviation sector, how sustainability of the aviation industry relies on greater progress towards gender equality and empowerment of women, as well as the importance of planning and prioritizing a more equal and equitable recovery.

Participants must register online by noon, March 6. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis.

The event will be conducted in English.
