At the same time, speaking to Money Review of Greece’s Kathimerini newspaper, Theoharis added that rapid testing for Covid-19 is a “valuable tool” that will be utilized to maximise border controls.
According to the Greek minister, the recent agreement between Greece and Israel for the open exchange of tourists who hold a vaccination certificate – known as the “green pass” in Israel – can serve as a model for additional such openings with other countries.
He also said that Greece was currently in talks with tourism stakeholders in the UK and US.
“It is important to have a clear and complete understanding of their plans, the strategy each country will choose for the opening of its borders, travel, etc. The only sure thing is that Greece will make the most of every opportunity to attract tourism and not just from the US and British markets,” he said.
Looking ahead, Theoharis said he expects 2021 to be a better year compared to last, adding however that hard work, accurate planning and actions by both private and public sectors are required to ensure Greece’s brand name is associated with safety, security and quality.
