Volunteer to Help Athens’ Strays

The Municipality of Athens is looking for volunteers that will actively support its animal welfare program that is dedicated to protecting the city’s strays.

Hundreds of stray cats and dogs of Athens are receiving treatment and are being sterilized on a daily basis with the help of volunteers.

The municipality has also opened a new shelter that hosts dozens of cats and dogs, while it has placed small houses, feeders and watering bowls for strays in various locations around the city.

“Today, the chain of care and protection is further strengthened and organized. The Municipality of Athens offers the opportunity to every citizen to become an important link of this chain,” the municipality said.

Citizens can enter the municipality’s newly launched website, www.animalscityofathens.gr, and sign up voluntarily to support its activities by:

  • Feeding stray animals in the neighborhood where they live
  • Hosting a stray animal (with all expenses covered by the Municipality),
  • Suggesting stray animals for adoption through social media
  • Working in a shelter
  • Supervising a cat community in their area
  • Training dogs of shelters
  • Collecting and rescuing animals (for qualified volunteers only).

Volunteers who wish to visit the municipal shelters on a regular basis and participate in the socialization of dogs can attend the municipality’s free seminars. The participants will receive a certificate of attendance while registered volunteers will receive a volunteer card with their name, photo and registration number.
