The Cycladic island of Andros in 2020 attracted a large number domestic travelers and managed to maintain 66.1 percent of last year’s arrivals between July and September, despite the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to a recent survey.

Conducted by the Municipality of Andros among tourism professionals to determine the behavior of travelers amid the pandemic, the survey found that the share of visitors from Greece was larger compared to 2019. The island also received travelers from Italy, the UK and France.

The main reasons why Greek travelers chose to visit Andros this year were its proximity to Athens, the feeling of safety, its beaches and calm environment.

The survey also showed that the percentage of younger travelers to the island increased compared to the previous year with the number of visitors aged between 50 and 60 and 61+ decreasing.

Andros was found to have attracted a significantly larger number of solo travelers compared to 2019.

Moreover, according to the survey, most visitors stayed on the island for 2-3 or 4-6 nights.

The survey also said that visitors chose their accommodation based on the range of hospitality services, the strict regulations and hygiene measures against Covid-19.

Andros is just a two-hour ferry trip from Rafina, the closest port to Athens International Airport.
