Special Virtual Athens Marathon 2020 Announced for November

Athens Marathon The Authentic

Following the cancellation of this year’s “Athens Marathon. The Authentic”, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) and the organizing committee have announced that they will hold a virtual edition of the event during November 8-22.

“Taking into consideration that a large number of runners were getting ready for the annual Athens Marathon event, we’ve decided to offer them the chance to take part in something new and very different in the Covid-19 era: the Virtual Athens Marathon 2020,” SEGAS said.

During November 8-22, participants will be able to run a 5- or 10km distance anywhere – on the street, in a park or their treadmill, whenever and for as many times as they wish to improve their time and ranking.

Registration for the Virtual Athens Marathon 2020 opens on October 12 and includes a special medal of the virtual race, an official Adidas running t-shirt and the participation certificate. An entry fee applies. Runners will receive their personal participation number via e-mail.

The organizers are aiming to attract 10,000 virtual registrations.

Meanwhile, the federation has launched a mobile application available on Google Play and App Store, offering information on the virtual event.  Those interested can download the app, select the Virtual Athens Marathon 2020 event, “and become members of a wider, active community by participating in our new action with a sense of responsibility and self-protection,” SEGAS said.

“We are optimistic that a new situation will emerge soon. Greece and all other countries will overcome the obstacles and together create a different, healthier 2021. The street community in Greece and around the world has a unique dynamic that is growing,” the Federation added.

The registration and participation in the virtual event is not related to the runners’ registration for the live Athens Marathon 2020 event that has been canceled.
