Passenger Traffic Still Down at Athens Airport Due to Covid-19
Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport (AIA) last month was below the respective 2019 levels by 60.4 percent, amounting to 1.2 million passengers, approximately.
“August was yet another month substantially impacted by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic crisis and its impact on air travel,” AIA said in an announcement.
The airport saw both domestic and international passenger traffic to be sharply reduced, by 47 percent and 66.2 percent, respectively.
Overall, during the eight-month period from January through August 2020, the airport’s passenger traffic totalled almost 6 million, a decline of 65.3 percent compared to prior-year’s levels, as a result of the sharp traffic drop suffered due to the impact of the pandemic, during the period March through August.
Analytically, the volumes of international and domestic passengers decreased by 68.4 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively.
In terms of the number of flights made at AIA during the first eight months of 2020, they amounted to 77,584, recording a drop of 49.7 percent compared to 2019 due to flight cancellations during the March – August period, as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. Domestic flights decreased by 44.2 percent and international flights by 53.8 percent.
