Greek Covid-19 Curfew for Bars and Restaurants Extends to Athens

The Greek government on Friday announced that the curfew for bars and restaurants already imposed on a number of destinations to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19), will extend to businesses in Athens.

Greece on Friday saw 254 new coronavirus cases (20 cases were “imported” from travelers abroad), raising the total number to 6,631. The death toll in the country has reached 223.

As of August 17, restaurants, bars and clubs in Attica, which includes Athens, the Saronic Gulf and Kythira islands, will close at midnight through to 7am.

The measure, which will be in force until August 24, already applies to the regions of Crete, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; the regional units of Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Larissa and Corfu; and the municipalities of Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Volos, Katerini, Rhodes, Antiparos, Zakynthos and Kos.

The restrictions announced by Deputy Civil Protection & Crisis Management Minister Nikos Hardalias, also include a capacity limit (a 50-person cap) for public events in affected areas until August 24. Exempt from the capacity limit are activities and events where Covid-19 rules already apply such as restaurants, theaters and cinemas.
