Almost 200 Beaches in Attica Approved for Water Quality – List

Some 200 beaches in the Attica Region, including surrounding islands, have been approved for the quality of their waters after sample tests carried out by the regional authority’s Directorate for Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Health.

More specifically, 199 beaches in the Attica Region, including the beaches in Alimos, Nea Makri, Rafina, Anavyssos, Marathonas, Lagonisi, Oropos, Asteras Vouliagmenis, and other popular seaside locations near Athens, such as Agistri, Aegina and Kythera, were found to be within the permissible recommendations and requirements as set out by government legislation, based on the samples taken.

This year sanitary and health authorities increased the number of samples collected for microbiological analysis based on visitor numbers.

Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis said the decision to test more beach locations was urgent in view of Covid-19, which has forced hundreds of Greeks to stay in Attica this year for their holidays.

“Our goal is to ensure the water cleanliness and suitability of the beaches along the Attica Riviera and to showcase their natural beauty as an incentive to attract domestic and foreign visitors,” Patoulis said.

“With this in mind, we will continue to invest in Attica’s beaches with projects and interventions, promoting marine tourism to make Attica an even more attractive destination for its residents, domestic travelers, and foreign visitors,” he said, adding that the ultimate goal is to transform the Attica Region into a summer destination in and of itself, combining cultural events, alternative tourism options, and marine recreation.
