Greek Island Accommodation Facilities Face Hardest Covid-19 Test
The largest percentage of businesses suspending operations due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak are accommodation facilities with those in the South Aegean Region having suffered the largest blow according to the Hellenic Statistical Service (ELSTAT).
More specifically according to ELSAT data, facilities located in the South Aegean Region offering accommodation services account for the largest share of all tourism enterprises suspending operations due to Covid-19, accounting for 34.4 percent of the total, with the Peloponnese recording the lowest rate at 10.7 percent.
At the same time, the South Aegean Region also accounts for more than half – at 56.7 percent, the largest share – of persons employed in businesses that have suspended operations, with the Attica Region accounting for the smallest share at 20.7 percent.
ELSTAT assessed finance ministry data collected over the 2017-2020 period. According to that data, the largest percentage of companies that have suspended operations are in accommodation, (87.1 percent), followed by F&B services (80.9 percent), education (88.8 percent), and sports activities (86.7 percent).
Broken down, accommodation employs 94.2 percent of all employees out of a job due to Covid-19, followed by sports activities at 90.2 percent, F&B services with 89.6 percent, and education 89.9 percent.
In total, according to ELSTAT data, 14.6 percent (or 205,984) companies across Greece have suspended operations out of 1,415,370; a total of 1,063,098 employees out of 4,178 million are out of a job as a result; the majority (59,838) of closed companies are active in retail accounting for 40 percent of the total.
