Greek Tourism Ministry Sets Post-Coronavirus Agenda

Ways to redefine Greece’s tourism product so it can adapt to the new reality after the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic subsides topped the agenda of a meeting between Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) board of directors.
Theoharis stressed the need to focus on re-opening the country’s hotels under new health guidelines in tune with post-Covid-19 needs of travelers.
“Planning ahead for the next day in Greek tourism, we are now focusing on opening hotels that have incorporated all the necessary health regulations as well as every procedure along the tourism chain so that these fully comply with health developments based on the guidelines of the National Public Health Organization,” said Theoharis.
Theoharis referred to the importance of bringing regional authorities and tourism stakeholders on board this effort so that together with the ministry and the GNTO they can formulate a unified strategy for the promotion of the Greek tourism product.
The minister underlined the importance of re-examining each of the country’s source markets and devising a new approach based on new needs and demands.
Other topics on the agenda included new promotional actions within the #GreeceFromHome initiative, strengthening the GNTO’s framework of activity, and staying on top of emerging trends in travel that incorporate health and safety so that Greece will be ready to step up to the new reality.
GNTO President Angela Gerekou underlined the importance of open communication and coordination in this effort and invited stakeholders countrywide to come up with innovative ideas.
On his part, GNTO Secretary General Dimitris Fragakis highlighted the importance of refocusing the country’s tourism strategy on health and safety.
The board meeting also approved the suspension of all H1 promotional activity; the 2019 financial report; and the GNTO’s memorandum of cooperation with the National Theater for the promotion of culture and tourism through the exchange of know-how and joint actions.
When tourism restarts it will be virtually impossible to have restrictions in hotels both large and small.
In villas and apartment stays its a different story, but in reality, the world will just have to accept that life goes on.
The true facts will come forward at the end of the year when all countries can look at the death rates and see if there was a spike or not.
