Chania Archaeological Museum Opening Set for Spring 2021
Aiming to ensure that all culture projects, restoration, constructions, and renovations are moving ahead as scheduled, Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni visited Crete, this week where she announced among others that the Archaeological Museum of Chania will be ready to open to the public in the spring of 2021.
Mendoni also met with Chania Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis with whom she discussed a new agreement between the ministry and the municipality that will set the groundwork and timetable for high priority works including restoration projects in the Old Town and the fortress and plans for the unification of the city’s historical and archaeological sites.

Referring to the agreement, Mendoni said it would speed up funding and procedures necessary for the projects to begin.
“In the next month, if possible in the first fortnight of March, we will have ensured that pending issues are examined by the Central Archaeological Council for the launch of works approved,” she said.
Mendoni also visited a number of Cretan sites and landmarks, including the Chania fortifications, Agios Nikolaos Bastion, and the Mocenigo Bastion.

Municipal authorities are aiming to designate the entire Old Town of Chania as a tourist zone in efforts to facilitate visitation and boost city segments that are currently outside popular areas.
“We had the chance to propose solutions to the problems we’ve been dealing with in recent years in relation to the management of monuments and to discuss proposals for immediate intervention and proposals that have a long-term character,” said Simandirakis.
More and better car parking for tourists would be a lot better
