Sports Tourism in Greece’s Strategy to Attract More Visitors

The Greek Tourism Ministry has announced that it will support the Ironman 70.3 Greece 2020 mega sporting event as part of its strategy to diversify the country’s tourism product and attract more visitors.

Ironman 70.3 Greece is a mega sporting event that involves swimming, cycling and running.

The challenging triathlon event will be held in Greece for the second time on April 5, 2020, at Costa Navarino in the Peloponnese.

Minister honors IRONMAN TRI ladies of Greece

Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis announced the ministry’s support to Ironman 70.3 Greece during a recent event held in the honor of Greek female athletes that participated in the first Ironman event that took place in the country.

“Accomplishing 1.9 km in swimming, 90.1 km in cycling and 21.1 km in running, confirms that everything is possible,” Theocharis said while giving the medals to the athletes.

“This is why we have decided to support the event,” the minister said, underlining that such events are an important opportunity to attract high-quality visitors, whether athletes or spectators, to Greece.

“We want tourism that leaves its footprint. We want the tourist not only to leave our country more relaxed but also full of experiences,” he said.

According to Deputy Tourism Minister Manos Konsolas, the ministry’s support to the Ironman event is based on a strategy to diversify the Greek tourism product.

“Sports tourism accounts for 12.12 percent of the global tourism market. The first Ironman Greece event attracted high level visitors,” he said.

This year Ironman 70.3 Greece will inaugurate IRONKIDS Greece – Navarino, a race designed for kids from 2 to 13 years old.
