Athens Welcomes Holiday Season with More Lights than Ever

The Municipality of Athens this year has welcomed the holiday season with more lights than ever before, thanks to its “Adopt your city” program, an initiative that has been embraced by public and private sector entities and organizations.
The center of Athens , along with its giant Christmas tree at central Syntagma Square, now features numerous light displays along the surrounding streets, including Panepistimiou, Stadiou and Ermou, which were decorated by 19 companies, foundations, organizations and associations.

These synergies gave the municipality the opportunity to to illuminate other areas in Athens beyond the city center.
“Dozens of avenues, streets and squares in the city’s seven districts, as well as in areas that had never been illuminated or adorned in the past, have now been filled with lights,” the municipality said in an announcement.
Among these are Acharnon, Achilleos, Ippokratous, Liosion, Michalakopoulou and Eratosthenous streets, as well as Keramikos square in Gazi, Exarcheia square and the Agia Zoni pedestrian walkway in Kypseli.

“Our goal was to illuminate and offer a festive atmosphere to neighborhoods beyond the city center. We have succeeded. Dozens of streets and squares are decorated for Christmas and we promise to continue even more each year,” Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis said.
