Five Greek Mariners Join Celebrity Cruises’ 1st All-female Crew

Five professionals from Greece, will be joining an entirely female bridge and officer team on the “Celebrity Edge” which sails away on March 8, 2020 demonstrating Celebrity Cruises’ commitment to #BRIDGEthegap.

More specifically, Greek officers Maria Karoutsou (environmental officer), Maria Koliou (chief officer), Despoina Tsairi (first officer), Anna Avgoustaki (third Engineer), and Ioana Tzovara (second Officer) will set sail on International Women’s Day – March 8, 2020 – aboard the award-winning Celebrity Edge with Captain Kate McCue at the helm and accompanied by 21 other female officers from Spain, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Malta, South Africa, Israel, Ghana, New Zealand, Finland, France, the Philippines, the UK, Romania, and Cameroon, together with Celebrity Cruises President and CEO Lisa Lutoff-Perlo.

“We are all passionate about closing the gender gap,” said Lutoff-Perlo. “Over the last few years, we have worked hard to diversify the crew on board and bring more women than ever into our industry.”

“I am inspired every day by the amazing women we have working throughout this organization – both on land and at sea. They’re proof that there’s power in diversity,” said Captain McCue.

Committed to advancing the role of women in shipping, Celebrity Cruises has been at the forefront of the efforts to bridge the gender gap hiring the first American female cruise ship captain and ensuring that at least 22 percent of their bridge teams consist of women.

It should be noted that gender equality in the world of shipping is still lagging with females accounting for a mere 2 percent of all professionals at sea.
