Angela Gerekou Appointed New President of the Greek National Tourism Organization

Angela Gerekou has been appointed as the new president of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO), according to an announcement by the Tourism Ministry on Thursday. Her appointment follows the resignation of Charalambos Karimalis from the position recently.

“The GNTO will be chaired by Angela Gerekou, whose experience and knowledge in tourism will help form a modern organization, adapted to the new circumstances,” Tourism Minister Haris Theoharis said.

During 2009-2010, Gerekou was Greece’s Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister, in the cabinet of George Papandreou.

“We welcome her and wish her all the best,” the tourism minister said.

In a meeting with the minister, Gerekou discussed issues related to the GNTO’s structure and operation, and its strong development in terms of promoting Greek tourism.

“I will strive to strengthen the GNTO in this new era that begins for the country,” Gerekou said.

Greek tourism has a long way to go before becoming tourist-friendly unfortunately.

Congratulations to Ms Gerekou for this new role.
I take this opportunity to highlight the importance to enhance and develop public infrastructures in many areas of Greece, particularly the ones whose source of income comes from tourism.
I was on holiday last week in Corfu and I was ashamed to see the tones of garbage on the roads laying there for days. Unfortunately, in Kerkyra the garbage is not collected daily and this should be revised immediately in summer time. Roads are very bad maintained with lots of curves and only one lane….
Greeks are paying lots of taxes and deserve a much better quality of infrastructures. I hope you can influence on the improvement of these two important challenges highlighted. good luck. marimar
