Syros Secures Funds for Open Mall Overhaul
The Cycladic island of Syros announced this week that it had secured 1.3 million euros in EU funding for the overhaul of its historic center and for upgrade works along its coast front.
Setting sustainable development as a priority and aiming to boost business activity, increase tourism, enhance services offered, and improve the quality of life for its residents, the Syros-Ermoupolis Municipality in collaboration with the Syros Trade Association will oversee the Open Mall project funded through the NSRF Operational Program “Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation 2014-2020”. Local authorities are expected to set deadlines in the coming period.
The Open Mall initiative is the second regeneration program being implemented in the historic center of Ermoupolis, in parallel to the overhaul of the coastal zone.
First-phase upgrade works include pavement, road, and lighting works, creation of public rest rooms, the installation of wireless internet access points and “smart” benches, as well as enforcing unified signage for all shops participating in the Open Mall.
In its second phase, overhaul and upgrade works will be carried out at other island locations.
