KTEL Intercity Bus Service to Get Baggage Tracking System

Greece’s intercity bus service – known as KTEL – is set to get a much-needed overhaul including a new luggage tracking system after the infrastructure ministry decided to allocate funds in this direction.
Budgeted at 124,000 euros, the baggage management system includes the installation of software, computer support and network security at the Kifissos bus depot.
This new system, which includes airport-style bar-code tagging and identification of luggage (via sticker tags), is set to be installed at 63 KTEL ticket outlets and is expected to effectively route checked luggage to its final destination, simplify baggage claim, ensure security and provide info for the bus service provider to identify and trace bags that have gone missing.
Users booking tickets online will be able to print luggage tags.
In the meantime, the government has still failed to proceed with works for the construction and management of a new KTEL depot planned for the industrial area of Eleonas, Athens, expected to handle over 12 million passengers annually.
The new hub, to replace the Kifissos and Liossion terminals, is budgeted at approximately 300 million euros, and will be erected at Eleonas, which is also connected with the metro.
