Athens, Greece, in 2022 will host the 44th COSPAR Scientific Assembly, a major international conference on space research, following a successful bid by the Academy of Athens.
Dubbed the “Space Olympics”, the world assembly of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) is organized every two years in a different country.
The 2022 event will be held in Athens during July 16-24 and is expected to bring some 4,000 international space experts and scientists from universities and research centers across the globe, representatives of the largest international space agencies, as well as the world’s largest space technology companies, who will be attending the conference in exhibition stands.
The 2022 bid was prepared by the Office of Space Research and Technology of the Academy of Athens and supported by the Ministries of Digital Policy and Tourism, the City of Athens and many universities and research institutions in Greece.
“Athens welcomes another big conference and congratulates the professor of Astrophysics, academic, Stamatis Krimizis, chair of the organising committee, for this very great success, which is an opportunity for the capital and a recognition of Greece’s scientific potential,” Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said in an announcement on Monday.
The 44th COSPAR Scientific Assembly will feature a number of scientific events covering all disciplines of space research, such as Earth sciences, planetary exploration, astronomy, astrophysics and the heliosphere.
“Athens, with this success, is not only in the center of global scientific developments, but also shows that it continues its dynamic course in conference tourism,” Mayor Kaminis said, adding that the ACVB will continue to strive toward that goal.
