Austrian Seniors Choose Greece for Holidays

All the more Austrian seniors are choosing Greek destinations for their holidays with two retiree groups having already booked for the 2019-2020 period.

Austrian pensioner association Pensionisten Verband returns to Greece for a third time with plans for its members to visit Crete in the spring of 2019 and 2020. The association, which has also been to Rhodes, Kos, Corfu and Halkidiki in the past, has arranged two five-week trips for its 20,000 members from April to May.

The country’s Senioren Bund group is also planning its yearly trip to Greece with visits to Thessaloniki, Mt Olympus, Meteora, Larissa, Delphi and Attica-Athens between April and June 2019.

The Greek tourism ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) have been actively promoting senior travel due to its numerous benefits. The over-60 traveler has plenty of free time, spends more, is keen on travel and opts to take holiday excursions in low season contributing in this way to the extension of the tourism season.

The promotion of senior travel is part of the ministry’s drive to develop special interest tourism. In this direction, Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura tabled a bill last month aimed at regulating the development of thematic tourism products with goal to enhance the attractiveness of destinations and boost competitiveness.
