The Municipality of Athens on Monday launched a new smart parking system that helps drivers find available parking spaces in the Greek capital and pay through their mobile phone.

The new “myAthensPass” smartphone application allows drivers in Athens city center to buy parking time in an easy, fast and reliable manner.

“We make use of new technologies for simple but basic everyday activities to improve our lives,” Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis said in an announcement.

The “myAthensPass” application first operated on a pilot scheme a year ago and has gradually replaced the previous system of parking scratchcards. It covers the city’s controlled parking zones, which include a total of 10,500 parking spaces – 5,000 spaces for residents; 3,500 for visitors and 2,000 for motorcycles.

“We are committed to offer better digital services to Athens’ residents and visitors,” the mayor added.

Smartphone users can download the “myAthensPass” application through the Google Playstore or Apple’s Appstore; charge their credit, debit or prepaid card with the desired sum starting from 50 cents and up to 20 euros; choose a parking space on the digital map, the parking duration and type in their licence plate number.

“With the upgrade of Athens’ parking system, we improve access to the city, not only for vehicles but also for pedestrians,” said Andreas Varelas, the Deputy Mayor responsible for the City Center and the Municipal Police.
